The Borno State Chapter of the National Association of Physically Challenged Persons Joined their counterparts nationwide to commemorate International Wheelchair Day 2024 with a call to the Borno state government to domesticate the law that grants their well-being.
In his address at the event, the Bornos state Chairman Mohammed Abubakar Said the United Nations set aside 1st March of every year as International Wheelchair Day to promote a more positive perception of wheelchair users and address barriers encountered in their daily lives.
Earlier in her keynote address Hajiya Adama Balla trustee of the Association highlighted the importance of the wheelchair to them saying it gives them easy access to services such as classrooms for learning and Hospitals for Medical Services hence its absence makes life difficult for any physically challenged person.
She advocated for Government and non-governmental Organizations, the Private Sector, and individuals to donate Wheelchairs to their Members to allow them access to services easily. While donating Hajiya Adama calls for a consultation so that the right wheelchair is donated.
The Secretary-General of the organization Mohammed Aji on behalf of their members thanked Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for supporting them while appealing to him to assent to the disability welfare bill that provides for their well-being as citizens.
