 PEACE BUILDING HERWA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE COVENENDS TOWN HALL MEETING ON LAND DISPUTE


- Stakeholders Advocate for Scientific Approach


On Sunday 17th October 2021 Herwa Community Development Initiative HCDI under the auspices of Jere Community Peace and Security  Partnership CPSP with the support of  Managing Conflict In Nigeria MCN British Council, European Union Funded project,  Covened a one day town Hall Meeting at Dujuma international Hotel Maiduguri on Land Dispute Between MAIRI 'B' and KALERI Village of Jere and Mafa Local Government Areas respectively.



 Stakeholders attended  include Chairman Jere Local Government Alhaji Umar Guja Tom, Representative of Chairman. Mafa Local Government Alhaji Ibrahim Konto, security Personnel, Religious and traditional leaders  from  Mafa and Jere Local Government Areas, Representatives of Urban Development Board.


During the meeting session issues boardering the boundary dispute between the two Community were extensively Discussed and concrete decisions on  sustainable resolutions of the desipute was reached.


Some of the resolutions include the referral of the issue to State technical  Boundary  Community under the leadership of the state Deputy Governor Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur as Stakeholders also agreed the deployment of scientific approach to solve the dispute.

 HERWA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE IMPLEMENTS SUPPORT FOR SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION  UNDP/BOSG  EU FUNDED PROGRAM (PART 1)



Herwa Community Development Initiative HCDI  is a community based organisation CBO in Borno State with Focus on Humanitrain and Development activities. Since its establishment years back,  the organization has done much in environmental protection and Sanitation especially in controlling deforestation and desertification in prone communities of Northern Borno.


These  potentials of Herwa CDI attracted the  opportunity to implement the Borno State Government/ United Nations Development Program European Union Funded program of Sustainable Waste Management and Environmental protection in local governments of Bama,Biu and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. 


The program which is aimed at Creating Jobs for youths, Erosion and Disease outbreak  Control includes Community Awareness and Sensitisation, Training of Communities on Waste Management ( Separation and Disposable) Evacuation/ Clearing of Drainages and Solid waste dump areas.


According to the Executive Director Herwa CDI, Alhaji  Ngubdo Hassan said " In Maiduguri the  Implementations of the program was is in phases, first and Second phase was done in twenty Eight Communities each  while the third third phase which is currently ongoing is being done in Thirty Communities with Four Thousand Four Hundred and Thirty Beneficiaries engaged for Three Months."



To ensure adequate implementation of the  Program, The HCDI put in place adequate Monitoring and Evaluation strategies, Establishment of a situation room from where  the field supervisors report  daily then a weekly review meeting follows where program managers meet with the  field supervisors and area managers to review work done.  "This strategy is  a continues one", said Mr Ngubdo.



To sustain the program, the HCDI established at  the Community level a sanitation Committee to control indiscriminate disposal of Waste by Community Members and  Food vendors operating nearby roads 


Supervising the Program across the implementing communities, the Hon Commissioner of Youths Empowerment and Sport development whose ministry is represting the State government in the projects expressed satisfaction with the  modalities of HCDI in implementing the program as satisfactory.

 PEACE BUILDING: Herwa Community Development Initiative Convenes Town Hall Meeting.


Henceforth Deejays and Mandiri Musical Bands too Must Have Security Clearances before Operating


Under aegis of Jere local government Area Community Peace And Safety partnership (CPSP), Herwa Community Development Initiative with the support of British Council Program Managing Conflict In Nigeria MCN, Today 7th October 2021 convened a critical Stakeholders town Hall Meeting at Dujuma international Hotel Maiduguri to proffer solutions on Youths Violence during Wedding Celebration.



The Community Peace and Safety partnership is a platform created  by Herwa Community Development Initiative with the aim of strengthening peace Machanism in the Area. The platform have government officials, traditional and religious leaders, youths and women groups as Members and usually meet on monthly basis.


Briefing the media the Executive Director, Herwa Community Development Initiative Alhaji Mohammed Ngubdo said the town Hall Meeting is bringing Stakeholders to address violence issues related to the activities of Deejays and Mandiri Bands.



Delivering key note address,  professor Ibrahim Umara from Center for Peace Studies University of Maiduguri dwelt extensively on the historical background of the peaceful coexistence of Borno State and also called on the Stakeholders to appreciates the relative return of  peace to the state by understanding their businesses and align it to the norms and value of the community in which they operate.

The town hall meeting brought to the fore many issues arising from the activities of the musical groups and outline solutions to it.


Among the issues raised were influence of drug abuse on both youths and the band members, performance of the group  without consent of security and Community leaders, introduction of  alien culture into the society from activities of the group which is against the norms and Values of the Community while  leaders of the  group lament on the existence of many  miscreants in the community that intrude into their  performance despite taking measures.

Other issues  lamented are high unemployment rate among Youths in the community.



In other to address the issues, Stakeholders outline and agreed on action points which include:



Henceforth, every Deejay and Mandiri Musical Band should have clearance  from Security and Community leaders before operation.


No any Deejay or Mandiri Musical Band should receive invitation from rival or miscreant groups.


Stakeholders should embark on aggressive  sensitisation and awareness camping against Drug abuse.


- The Local Government  should devise sustainable means of empowering unemployed youths in the Community both educationally and Economically.

Gwange representing Borno Musician forum
